The Five Remembrances: Accompanying our Earth and Animal Kin with Resilience, Compassion and Joy

Drawing on the Five Remembrances, the Buddha’s teachings on impermanence, this six-part course explores the meaning and significance of life’s landmarks of experience common to all beings – aging, sickness, death, and loss – as they relate to us personally and to the Plant and Animal kin we accompany. Designed for rescue workers, healthcare professionals, activists and others engaged with the challenges of life’s arc, this course studies and reflects on the lessons of impermanence to increase our resilience and capacity to support others mindfully and compassionately. In so doing, we no longer separate ourselves from Nature or feel alone, but merge with the natural world in unbreakable solidarity.

Being Sanctuary: Trauma-Informed Internship Intensive

The Being Sanctuary Internship revolves around The Ten Principles of Being Sanctuary. The Internship provides in-depth study and implementation of trauma-informed care for Animals and Plants. We refer to the internship as intensive because of subject matter but most importantly it reflects a deep commitment to serve our Earth and Animal kin.

A trauma-informed framework approaches Earth and Animal wellbeing and protection from solution space. As a relational framework, a trauma-informed perspective, this requires simultaneous transformation of human perceptions and ethics towards Nature. This is reflected in the internship structure which integrates objective (core concepts of (trans-species) traumatology) and subjective (reflexive, undergirding dimension of trauma-informed care including mindfulness and meditation practice). To understand someone, it is necessary to understand ourselves. Instructor: Gay Bradshaw.

Living One

Series Three: A Re-Enchanted World starts August 22

This third series of conversations, A Re-enchanted World, continues exploration into “unseen” worlds. The mercantile, capitalist, realist-Cartesian paradigm has supported scientific, technological, and industrial advances, but stripped our psyches and imaginations – even our very perceptions and understanding – of the richly entangled, convivially connected nature of life on our living planet. You are invited to join conversations with people who have shed their cultural blinkers and experience the wonder of existence. Our first speaker is Brooke Williams, author of Dragonfly…more

Elephants in South Africa

New Trauma-Informed Elephant Report

This summer, Kerulos’ Gay Bradshaw and Michele Franko completed a 65-page Social Reintegration and Psychological Assessment of South African Elephants trauma-informed study for Duma and other Elephants living in the security and beauty of the Shambala Reserve. Duma is a 43-year-old African Elephant who was rescued by the EMS Foundation and 4PAWS team through the Toward Freedom Program which rescues and reinstates exploited Elephants to their natural lands. Orphaned at two years of age when his family was slaughtered, Duma spent the next twenty years in a circus followed by another twenty years in the zoo. There, he sustained not only severe deprivation but witnessed successive deaths of family and friends which left him alone for five years. Today, he is thriving in mind and body, celebrating his first year of freedom. Bravo for Elephant liberation!

A Wonderful Success for Elephants

Michele Franko, Kerulos Stewardship Council, will be traveling this month to meet and work with the EMSF on the assessment of Duma, a 43 year old male Elephant, who was rescued by EMS and Shambala, with a team of veterinarians from Four Paws International, from the National zoo to live at the Shambala Private Reserve, South Africa. A wonderful success for Elephants.
