The Kerulos was founded by Executive Director Dr. Gay Bradshaw for the purpose of bringing science and sanctuary together in service to all animals. The Center was inspired by Gay’s research that “discovered” human-caused Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in free-living elephants.

Featured in preeminent scientific journals (Nature, American Scientist) and other media (New York Times Magazine; ABC 20/20), this research has been extended to great apes, parrots, orcas, and grizzlies. This new field, trans-species psychology – a “science of sentience” – openly acknowledges that other animals possess capacities comparable with us to think, feel, and experience consciousness. Kerulos projects are designed to catalyze global cultural change and usher in a new era of peace and well-being for our animal kin.

Living for animals, means that we have to live like animals. Our eyes and ears have to pick up sights and sounds that most others would miss I haven’t taken a morning paper for 40 years…The news I read is printed on the ground.
